Anna came round slumped on her back doorstep, struggling to remember what had happened. Her ribs hurt. And her legs. And her stomach. And her face. At the speed of a tortoise, she managed to get onto her hands and knees, and sat back on her heels, the world spinning around her, a weight seeming to sink to the back of her head. Her stomach heaved and she puked onto the steps, retching until there was nothing left but bile.
âHey, are you okay?â She glanced over to see a man standing by the back gate. He walked towards her, a shopping bag in his hand, the back lane being a cut through to the supermarket.
She groaned, a wave of dizziness washing over her, feeling too ill to even speak.
He put his bag down. âHave your hurt yourself? Oh my God, is that blood?â He grimaced when he got closer, pulled his phone from his pocket. âOh, your poor face. Youâre going to have a real shiner. Look, Iâm calling for help, okay? Looks like youâve had a nasty fall.â
She could feel herself tipping sideways and put out an arm to steady herself, but there was nothing there to connect with.
âLet me help,â he said, grabbing her before she smashed into the steps. âLetâs get you lying down.â He took off his jacket and folded it for a pillow, putting her in the recovery position before calling an ambulance.
He crouched beside her, gave her a reassuring smile and she couldnât quite place him. She thought she knew all her neighbours, but she was sure she hadnât seen him before. âIâm Adam, by the way. End house.â Ah, that made sense, he was one of the medical students. No wonder he knew what to do. âLook Iâm going to go and get a blanket to keep you warm while we wait for the ambulance. Wonât be a moment.â
She managed to murmur a âthank youâ before she drifted into blackness again.
